PASSAGES

Mapping life’s movement through art and writing

Passages is a virtual three-week course for exploring creativity and self reflection through the framework of our past, present, and future. Each session includes space for writing, art making, and communal sharing. Just the right balance of freedom and guidance, Passages is meant to support your unique practice through the ritual of showing up.

Passages takes place on Zoom in alignment with the changing seasons. Cameras may be on or off and sharing is always optional. Come as you are and engage as much or as little as you are comfortable. Recordings are sent to participants via email and a communal Discord page.

Passages may be a good fit for anyone who:

  • Wants to connect to themself and others through creativity

  • Loves to make things but struggles to prioritize the time and space for their art

  • Needs room for exploration and play

  • Feels stuck and wants to work their way forward

  • Delights in noticing the rhythms and patterns of their life

  • Works well with a little structure and a little looseness

  • Values softness, expression, and community

Testimonials:

“Passages offers time to reflect and look inward. Julia is a wonderful facilitator who incorporates her own creative approach and style to leading an intimate group through a brief but emotional journey through time. If you ever thought about doing The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron, skip that and do this instead.”

-Abby Kacen
“Julia has created an amazingly safe, welcoming, and creative space to explore life questions. I didn't know what to expect going into it, and I am filled with gratitude for the whole experience. Highly recommend for all curious humans!!”
-Passages Participant

“Passages became such a sacred space for my creativity this summer. It exceeded all of my expectations, and I loved the format (a mix of writing and creating alongside others). Even over Zoom, I felt a deep connection to others in the course as they shared about their creativity and observations through each weeks prompt. It was truly magical and I look forward to taking it again!”
-Allie Ofisher

“Really powerful experience with a great group! Julia helps you dive deep into the unique way that you experience time. Every week, you tap into the way it felt/feels/might feel to be different iterations of yourself at different points in time. It’s work that’s dizzying but invaluable - take the plunge!”
-Robert

“Passages gave me the time and space to move closer to myself. Julia is an expert-level facilitator - she creates a container that is warm, encouraging, and \\\, giving each of us the opportunity to meander or get right to the point, depending on what we need at the moment. Each prompt offered a juicy starting point for writing and artmaking and they all nicely built on each other. I love having the discord group as a way to share ideas and keep the momentum going between workshops and IRL (a dream!). In only three sessions, I feel like I'm part of a real community and my only complaint is that I would love to continue this work with this group for much longer.”
-April R.

“SO INSPIRING!!!! I had such a fabulous time taking this class with Julia and our group. It was so encouraging to share those two hours weekly with other creatives and to listen to their interpretations of the prompts. I made such incredible art that I wouldn't otherwise have been brave enough to attempt. Creativity is a remarkable gift on humankind, explore yours!”
-Anne-Marie

“After hemming and hawing over previous passages courses, I decided to take the spring course as a leap into the darkness of winter ending and going through some grief. Passages was a wonderful start to my week each Monday and encouraged me to dive into the spirit of play and art - a much needed break from life’s demands. It was very therapeutic (my therapist even said so!) and I highly recommend. All skill levels and art mediums are encouraged”
-Melanie B

“The inspiration Passages cultivates is grown in so many ways: Julia’s gentle, encouraging, and enlightening prompts that get any artist at any stage to feel comfortable and confident to connect with their creativity and introspection; hearing the stories and journeys of full time/part time/no time artists and their own approach to what is moving them in their lives; the opportunity to sit down and slow down at the beginning of the week so that the week ahead is filled with intention. At first I was intimidated by all the lovely, talented, accomplished people in my cohort, but by the end I was seeing how celebrating each others journeys of creativity is the point in our mutual growth. This course gives you buds to nurture yourself into the future creative spirit you hope to bring with you going forward.”

You definitely do not have to be an artist to find value in Passages. I enjoyed the low stakes, low pressure style of the class. I never felt like my drawings had to be really good or that my shares should be really profound. It's a very come-as-you-are type of thing. The purpose was not to show off your artistic skills, it was to nurture yourself and rediscover and name the things that matter to you in this one little life you have. Julia fosters an environment that is anti-competition. Instead, her willingness to be vulnerable and open as a teacher/guide gives others the encouragement to be the same.”
-Megan

“Passages landed in my lap at exactly the perfect time. I'd been feeling stuck and wanting to reclaim some creative space for myself that I've lost over the years. Our meetings were such a perfect way to dip my toes back into those waters. Julia has really created some magic with this course. It's a beautifully safe and welcoming place. I'm only disappointed that it's already over! I would take this course again and/or any other course offered by Julia.”
-Andrea

“Passages was such a lovely intentional way to slow down and connect with myself, my art practice, and a safe and welcoming group of people. Julia is incredibly thoughtful and kind and has created a unique take on writing and art. Passages left me feeling inspired, present, and eager to jump into my sketchbook.”
-Kristen P.

“Passages was the perfect antidote to my dreary January! While I enjoy making art and writing by myself, this class reminded me how much joy and inspiration I derive from sharing in those processes with others. I found myself looking forward to each Monday and checking the Discord to see what new masterpieces were there. Would absolutely take this again!”
-Caroline

“I absolutely loved Passages! Julia is an incredible facilitator in helping to bring your most creative self to the forefront. It was the perfect start to the new year reconnecting with tactile art making, self reflection through writing and creating, and restarting a personal art practice. It's a warm, encouraging environment to connect with people of all different creative backgrounds and skillsets. I left inspired and full of gratitude and joy.”
-Cori

“Passages felt like a cozy, creative retreat each week. Julia led each class with the perfect mix of structure, play, and an openness to explore. I felt very supported and inspired.”
